May 24, 2015 3) When a monk makes an unarmed strike or monk weapon attack, the monk may make an unarmed strike attack as a bonus action. So, thus far, if my level 3 monk kicks someone, the monk gets to do a d4 instead of 1 damage due to Rule 2 above. Further, my monk can add either Str or Dex bonus to the attack, whichever is better due to Rule 1. I found i needed to get finesse weapons to allow my unarmed strikes to use my dex bonus for +attack. Is there a feat to get the dex for the damage bonus as well? Basically a magical weapon (monk weapon, amulet whatever) with the 'agile' enchantment is the only way apart from the rogue 3 level rogue 'dip' egslean05 mentioned.

- Dec 19, 2014 Unarmed Strike is a simple weapon (PHB 149), so anyone with proficiency in 'Simple Weapons' is proficient with Unarmed Strike. Rogues are proficient in simple weapons. So, enjoy that 4-damage punch at full proficiency. Note that Unarmed Strike is not a light weapon. So, if you want to be a two-fisted pulp hero you've got to take the Dual.
- A monk unarmed strike is an off-hand weapon. A character can use a monk unarmed strike to make attacks even while holding another one-handed weapon in the other hand, and can use the other one-handed weapon to make attacks even if it isn't an off-hand weapon.
- The bonus attack is just your standard monk unarmed strike. This means the Martial Arts ability that allows the addition of either DEX or STR to unarmed strike attacks and damage rolls can be used. Normal attack roll: 1d20 + proficiency bonus + (STR or DEX). At level 1 (damage scales with level), its damage is 1d4+ (STR or DEX).

@JeremyECrawford Does an enlarged monk get 1d4 extra dmg on unarmed attacks? It says weapon attack. but larger fists should hurt more right?

Being larger than Medium doesn't change a monk's Martial Arts dice. #DnDhttps://t.co/pL6C9vdhjW

@jaa0109@TheWardVGNote: That’s an official rules… Ruling.
Jeremy, would you allow it as a DM in your game, though?
As DM, I wouldn't rule differently. A monk's martial arts are about masterful use of the body, not brute strength.

@jaa0109@JeremyECrawfordBut there ARE cases where you go against strict RAW, correct? That’s what I was trying to get at.specific rules such as martial arts in the monk section overwrites general rules.

@TheWardVG@jaa0109 Check out my new answer about the spell itself.

@jaa0109@TheWardVG Turns out the original question was about the enlarge spell, nor enlarging a monk in general. New answer coming.

Monk 5e Unarmed Strike Damage
@JeremyECrawford My question was regarding the enlarge spell effects additional damage, not the attacks damage die itself

Enlarge/reduce spell can enlarge your weapon with you. RAW: doesn't work on unarmed strikes. RAI: I'd allow it. #DnDhttps://t.co/9HVhEfgqzk
